Suspension of maternity services review part of wider scandal - Gerry Adams TD

23 June, 2014 - by Gerry Adams

Responding to the announcement that the West/North West Hospitals Group has suspended its review of maternity services in the region, Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams TD said:

“The Group had no option but to suspend this review given what has emerged in recent weeks. However this decision is clearly the result of a wider scandal and a number of serious questions remain.

“Firstly, there are questions surrounding the Minister for Health’s appointment of Noel Daly as Chair of the West/North West Hospitals Group considering that he was a founder and shareholder of a private health consultancy and a well-known promoter of health privatization.

“The fact that the private health firm with which Mr Daly was associated was subsequently contracted to carry out the review of maternity services in the region raises further obvious questions.

“It is several weeks now since I first called on Minister Reilly to make a statement regarding his appointment of Noel Daly.

"To date, no detail or proper explanation, whether for that appointment or Mr Daly's subsequent resignation has been given to the Dáil or the public.

“In the meantime Noel Daly has resigned and now the review of maternity services has been suspended.

"It appears that the Minister, his Department and the HSE are attempting to drip-feed information regarding a major scandal in the health service.

“The Taoiseach is giving cover to the Health Minister by refusing to deal with this issue in the Dail despite repeated questions.

"We now need to know what Hospital Group CEO Bill Maher & other board members knew & when and we need to look at other procurement decisions taken under Noel Daly's tenure.

“The findings of the HSE review of how D&F Health Partnership was awarded a contract to examine maternity services should be published immediately and Minister Reilly must come into the Dáil and deal fully with questions around this scandal.”
