Sinn Féin to hold early convention for Dublin South West by-election

25 June, 2014

Sinn Féin Councillor Cathal King today announced that the party’s selection convention for the Dublin South West by-election will take place on Sunday 6th July at 6.30pm in the Plaza Hotel in Tallaght. Councillor King has decided not to put his name forward for selection.

Councillor King said;

“There is a real appetite for change out there and people voted for Sinn Féin in huge numbers in the Local Government and EU election as a real alternative to Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Labour. We will be asking people to come out in even greater numbers in the by-election in the Autumn to strengthen Sinn Féin’s team in the Dáil.

“Sinn Féin has grown from strength to strength in Dublin South West over the last decade. We are now the biggest party in the constituency and in the Local Government elections received 30% of the vote.

“We trebled our representation on South Dublin County Council to nine councilors and have continued the work of the progressive alliance that was in place over the last five years.

“There is a real appetite for change across Dublin South West. People are very disillusioned with Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Labour Party and they are looking for an alternative.

“On Sunday 6th July we will hold our selection convention to choose a candidate for the by-election. I have taken the decision not to put my name forward as a candidate for the by-election as I want to continue the important role I have taken on as Sinn Féin Group leader on the Council.

“Over the last five years, despite the economic recession, the left alliance, including Sinn Féin, on South Dublin County Council delivered for the people and proved that an alternative is possible. I want to continue that work in the coming years.

“I also believe it is important that there is greater female representation at Dáil level. In the Local Elections in Dublin South West 50% of Sinn Féin’s candidates were female and 50% of our councillors are female. We need to continue with this work.

“As our current TD is Seán Crowe, I believe that the party should choose a female candidate for the by-election. If our candidate is successful Sinn Féin would continue to have 50/50 male female representation in the constituency. This would be an important statement, particularly in a constituency that currently has no female TD.”
