Transfer of fiscal powers next logical step - McKay

19 September, 2014

Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has reiterated his call for the transfer of full fiscal powers to the North.

Speaking after the result of the Scottish referendum, the Sinn Féin economic spokesperson said;

"During the debate ahead of the poll there was a focus on the prospect of additional financial powers for Scotland, particularly fiscal powers.

"It is now up to the Westminster parties to fulfil the commitments made to the Scottish people.

"Sinn Féin will also be seeking the transfer of full fiscal powers to the Assembly.

"We have already delivered additional powers with the transfer of policing and justice and this has been successful.

"The next logical step is the transfer of fiscal powers.

"We face a number of unique economic challenges in the north as we emerge from conflict and decades of underinvestment by successive British governments, and the interlinked nature of the economies across the island.

"At present, decisions on trade, employment and investment in the North are made at Westminster to suit the needs of the British economy rather than the economy of the North.

"We want to change that. Unionists, however, do not have the political will to take responsibility and do the right thing by our economy and communities here.

"They want the privileges of devolution without the responsibility that power brings.

"Sinn Féin is committed to seeing full fiscal powers in the hands of locally elected and accountable elected representatives who will make decisions for the benefit of communities."
