Ní Riada - Proposed EU budget cuts will impact rural Irish communities
Speaking from the National Ploughing Championships today, Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada highlighted the negative impact that proposed cuts to the EU budget will have on rural Irish communities.
Ní Riada stated:
“I am particularly concerned at the proposed cuts to the Horizon 2020 programme which will diminish prospects for economic growth and employment. I have raised this issue at the European parliament on behalf of the rural and coastal communities who will be most at risk from these cuts.
Ms Ní Riada is a member of the Committees on Budgets and Fisheries in Brussels and has been vocal on the potential risks to the fishing industry as a result of EU budget cuts.
Ní Riada went on to say:
“The indifference shown by the European Commission in relation to fishermen is scandalous. The proposed cuts demonstrate a gross negligence on the part of the Commission and will directly affect the livelihoods of those living in coastal communities.
“However, I have been struck by the resilience and tenacity of Irelands rural an coastal communities who struggle to survive day by day and year after year.
“Today I have met with some fantastic rural organisations who are working for development and sustainability in their own communities.
“Their example inspires us to continue fighting their corner in Europe.
