Sinn Féin to bring motion before Dáil for reform of Seanad – Senator David Cullinane

10 October, 2014 - by David Cullinane TD

Senator David Cullinane has welcomed the election of independent candidate Gerry Craughwell to the Seanad. Speaking after the announcement that Mr Craughwell had won the seat the Sinn Féin leader in the Seanad said:

“I would like to congratulate Mr Craughwell on his election and I look forward to working with him in the months ahead.

“It is good to have another opposition voice and hopefully someone who is interested in building a fairer and more just Ireland.

“The Seanad now has an excellent opportunity to hold the government to account and to robustly challenge legislation that is unjust and regressive.

“Today’s result confirms that contrary to Fine Gael’s view, the Seanad is relevant and it can make a difference for ordinary people.

“Sinn Féin is committed to reform the of upper House and next week we will introduce a private members motion in the Dáil on this very issue.

“I would urge all TD’s to support the Sinn Féin motion and to vindicate the wishes of the majority of people who voted for reform in the 2013 referendum”.
