DRD minister must deal with flooding - Maskey

16 October, 2014 - by Paul Maskey

Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey has said regional development minister Danny Kennedy needs to manage his budget better to deal with flooding.

Speaking after parts of Belfast were affected by flooding this afternoon, the West Belfast MP said;

"The flooding in several parts of Belfast caused traffic chaos during the evening rush hour as motorists and pedestrians tried to make their way home from work and schools.

"In a number of parts of the city the flood water was more than a foot deep making driving conditions very dangerous.

"Regional Development minister Danny Kennedy needs to manage his department's budget better to ensure he has the resources to prevent flooding and to deal with it when it does occur.

"He has a responsibility to ensure that gullies are cleaned and drains are kept free from leaves.

"I would encourage anyone concerned about flooding to call the 24 hour helpline on 0300 2000 100."
