McElduff to meet minister over rural planning concerns
Sinn Féin MLA Barry McElduff will meet the environment minister on Thursday to discuss concerns about planning in rural areas.
Speaking ahead of leading a Sinn Féin delegation, which will include Ian Milne MLA and councillor Sean McPeake, to meet the environment minister, Mr McElduff said;
"Planning is a major cause for concern for people hoping to build in rural areas, particularly since the introduction of PPS14 and the subsequent PPS21 regulations, which placed tight controls on planning applications in rural areas.
"I will be leading a delegation which will include party colleagues, planning advisers and architects to meet the environment minister, Mark H Durkan, to discuss these concerns.
"We will be seeking to increase the opportunities for non-farming rural dwellers as well as trying to secure additional relaxations for farming families.
"It should also be remembered that more than 80 per cent of those who live in rural areas are not involved in farming.
"However, this is not reflected in PPS21 which contains very little provision for non-farming rural dwellers."
