Equality Commission has vital role in protecting people from discrimination – Ruane
Sinn Féin MLA Cáitríona Ruane has said it is essential that all communities are protected from discrimination.
Speaking after the Equality Commission announced it is to take legal action against a bakery which refused to supply a cake for a gay rights event, Sinn Féín equality spokesperson Caitríona Ruane said;
"The Equality Commission has an important role to play to protect people from discrimination.
"It is unfortunate that this issue could not have been resolved amicably by way of an apology before coming to this stage.
"This issue epitomises how far we still have to travel in the campaign for LGBT rights.
"We cannot have a situation in the North of Ireland whereby companies and businesses feel they can pick and choose which customers they serve and which they will not.
"That is discrimination and has echoes of 1960s Americas where shops refused to serve black people."
