McKay welcomes meeting with Minister on Dalriada
Sinn Féin North Antrim MLA Daithí McKay commenting following a meeting with Healthy Minister Jim Wells to discuss the situation pertaining to the Dalriada Hospital said:
“I welcome the opportunity to meet with the Health Minister regarding the proposal put forward by northern trust in regards to services at Dalriada.
“The Dalriada is a unique service that works well and demonstrates the importance of and quality of Health services in the rural community. The strength of feeling in the community on this issue demonstrates how staff and patients value the provision that is in place.
“The poor record of the Northern Trust is well documented. And the closure of the unit in Ballycastle and the dispersal of staff that have an acute understanding of MS patients needs will only make a bad situation worse.
“I outlined to the Minister the fact that there was no consultation, no equality assessment or rural proofing of this decision. This decision must be overturned on that basis alone.
“He has listened to those who will be most affected by the closure of this facility. If he has heard what they said he must now challenge the false economic argument that is being put forward by the Northern Trust.
“The closure of Dalriada will only lead to more bed blocking, more pressure on acute services and more cost to his budget.”
