EU has played major role in supporting peace process - Anderson

10 November, 2014 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the European Union has played a major role in supporting the peace and political processes in the North.

Speaking ahead of a debate on an EU resolution on Europe's support for the political institutions, Ms Anderson said;

"Europe has been a major support of the peace and political processes in the North over the last two decades and that valued support is continuing.

"Over the last year, I have brought victims groups and relatives of those killed by state violence to the European Parliament to enable them to bring their campaigns for truth and justice to an international audience.

"Martin McGuinness visited the European Parliament recently to meet with leaders of the various groupings to update them on the challenges facing the political process today.

"During that visit, he was heartened by the support from the leaders for the political process and the institutions.

"In fact, Martin Schultz, the President of the European Parliament, addressed the parliament in Strasbourg and outlined his ongoing support for the political process in the North.

"Just last week, I brought the Council of Europe's Human Rights Commissioner, Nils Muizneiks, to Belfast to address a conference on Britain's failure to comply with human rights legislation on state killings.

"It is clear that Europe continues to play a major role in encouraging the political process in the North and I have no doubt that will continue with this resolution."
