Stanley calls on government to publish Climate Change Bill

11 November, 2014 - by Brian Stanley TD

The Sinn Féin spokesperson on the Environment, Brian Stanley TD, has called on the Government to publish the long awaited Climate Change legislation which they promised in the Programme for Government in March 2011.

He was speaking during a committee debate on Ireland’s commitment to implementing the Doha Amendment to the Kyoto Protocol on the reduction of harmful emissions into the atmosphere.

Deputy Stanley said;

“While Ireland’s commitment to adhering to EU and global targets is commendable, it stands in stark contrast to the ongoing failure to bring forward the long awaited Climate Change Bill.

“I am also concerned that the heads of the legislation which have been published do not indicate that the current Government is going to enshrine binding targets in the Bill.

“That goes against the spirit and the terms of the recommendations of the all-party Environment Committee which published a report that recommends the adoption of clear achievable targets to be met before 2050.

“However, that can be addressed once the legislation is published, and I would strongly urge that the Government bring this forward before the Christmas recess.”
