DUP Health Minister continues his disgraceful attacks on west Belfast – McCorley

18 November, 2014 - by Rosie McCorley

Sinn Féin MLA for West Belfast Rosie McCorley has slammed health minister Jim Wells for focusing on West Belfast once again while speaking on a departmental report dealing with the sexual abuse of children.

 Speaking today Ms McCorley said:

“Once again the Health Minister Jim Wells has brought his personal prejudice and outdated stereotypes to the floor of the Assembly.

“When debating the very serious issue of the ‘Marshall Report on Child Exploitation in Northern Ireland’ the Health Minister chose to finish a question asked about the report by me by calling on ‘my community’ of West Belfast to help him ‘out’ those involved in abuse.

“He continued that we ‘make certain that there is no hiding place for the evil men exploiting children in West Belfast’.

“Jim Wells is doing a disservice to all those children who have been abused in children’s homes in order to score what in his mind are political points. It is a disgraceful approach.

“We either have a Health Minister who represents and works for all, leaving his personal baggage and outdated stereotypes at the door of his office or he should consider his position.”

The official record of the comments are below:

Mr Wells

“I am committed to delivering them as quickly as possible. I am also looking for the Member's community to commit to helping me in that by outing those involved in child sexual exploitation in her community who have not been exposed to date. That is a role that she, in particular, can play in her constituency to make certain that there is no hiding place for the evil men exploiting children in west Belfast.”
