Lynn Boylan MEP urges government to act now to ratify Istanbul Convention

1 December, 2014 - by Senator Lynn Boylan

Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin, Lynn Boylan, has once again urged the Irish government to sign and ratify the Istanbul Convention in order to help victims of domestic violence.

Speaking on the issue of domestic violence Ms. Boylan said:

“I cannot think of a better time for the Irish government to ratify this convention. The Women’s Aid 16 Days of Action campaign is currently underway and it has illustrated some frightening statistics surrounding violence against women.

“The Do or Die Foundation, which is dedicated to providing support to victims of Domestic Violence and to spread awareness of this issue is urging people to join them in St Cainicis Church Finglas tomorrow afternoon, where they are being filmed for a documentary on domestic violence.”

“This issue affects every strand of society and women and girls of every religion, class and race. This government can no longer ignore this issue and must act now to ratify this important new framework for all European governments to prevent and combat violence against women and girls.”
