Hazzard welcomes 'Hooded Men' review call
Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard has welcomed the Irish government's decision to ask the European Court of Human Rights to review its judgement on the 'hooded men' case.
The victims spokesperson said;
"I welcome the fact that the Irish government has lived up to its responsibility to ask the European Court of Human Rights to review its judgement on the 'Hooded Men' case.
"Failure to do so would have risked consigning this case to the past.
"In 1971 following the introduction of internment without trial 14 Irish citizens were tortured and get British government was found guilty of torture by the European Court of Human Rights.
"However, the decision was then challenged and overturned by the British government.
"It later emerged that the British had lied and that the torture was in fact planned, making the original judgement correct.
"It is right that this decision will now be reviewed by the European Court of Human Rights and hopefully the original decision will be reinstated."
