Adams expresses cautious welcome for Seanad Reform Working Group

7 December, 2014 - by Gerry Adams

Speaking this evening on the announcement of the Seanad Reform Working Group, Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams TD said:

"I welcome this evening's announcement of the establishment of a Seanad Reform Working Group, but I have major reservations based on the approach of the the Government and the Taoiseach to date.

"I asked the Taoiseach in the Dáil on 11th November to detail what plans the Government had to reform the Seanad.

"It was only at this point that he stated his intention to establish the Working Group announced this evening.

"However, the Government rejected a Sinn Féin Dáil motion on Seanad Reform tabled on 16th October.

"And the Taoiseach himself has seriously undermined public confidence in the the Seanad, not least in relation to the McNulty affair.

"I wrote to the Taoiseach last month making all of these points.

"I hope this evening's announcement will witness a renewed commitment by Enda Kenny to deliver meaningful Seanad reform."
