Irish Water needs to demonstrate transparency on lead contamination- Lynn Boylan

22 January, 2015 - by Senator Lynn Boylan

Dublin Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has called on Irish Water to provide customers with locations where their water supply could be at risk from lead contamination.

Speaking today on the issue Ms. Boylan said:

“Irish Water and Dublin City Council need to step up and indicate where residents might be at risk. I attended a public meeting in Raheny, organised by my Sinn Féin colleague and local councillor Ciarán O’Moore, on the issue before Christmas and I was appalled to hear that in some cases the pollution levels was found to be ten times above the safe limit for lead contamination.

Irish Water is refusing to step up and perform tests in other areas, leaving residents to investigate the matter themselves. The financial burden shouldn’t fall on households to upgrade the pipes within their homes. This would be unacceptable.

The HSE also needs to perform a role in this and should conduct an investigation immediately on the impact this contamination could have on the public’s health.”
