Sinn Féin supports rally against cuts to Community Sector-Cllr. Daithí Doolan

18 February, 2015 - by Daithí Doolan

Sinn Féin is supporting today’s rally against cuts to the community sector. The rally, being organised by SIPTU and community groups, is taking place at 2pm outside the Department of Environment.

Speaking from the rally, Cllr. Daithí Doolan, chair of the Dublin City Local Development Committee, said:

“The Community sector is once again under attack from the Department of Environment.

The social inclusion programme (SICAP) is the latest attempt by the Fine Gael/Labour Party government to further undermine the essential services provided by the community sector.

SICAP is fundamentally flawed and has been actively opposed by Sinn Féin.

Minister Kelly cut the funding for Dublin in this programme by a massive €742,000 in November 2014.

The cut will have a hugely negative impact in the city and poses a real threat to essential services in our communities.  I fear projects and services will close if this cut is not reversed.

Today’s protest is calling for a commitment from the government for an immediate reversal of this cut, no job losses and no loss of services.

“The total programme budget cut is €2m, which is a drop in the ocean compared to the department's overall spend. Dublin is being disproportionately hit. Dublin has the highest concentration of population, poverty and unemployment. This must be recognised by the Minister.”
