Noonan should support Greek proposal - Doherty
Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has said Finance Minister Michael Noonan should support Greece’s proposal to extend its loan agreement.
Deputy Doherty said:
“It is clear that difficult negotiations are taking place. It is now time though for Minister Noonan to distance himself from the intransigent approach of some countries particularly Germany.”
“The Greeks have shown flexibility and have presented a proposal which seeks to respect the mandate given to them by the Greek people and accommodate the concerns of others but have only been met with a stubborn attitude from some Eurozone countries.”
“Ireland should now back Greece’s proposals instead of siding with the unreasonable German approach. There will be many more days of negotiations over this issue but for now Ireland should signal that it is on the side of those who are willing to take a responsible role in reaching an agreement. Moreover, Ireland should be facilitating agreement rather than hiding in the corner.”
