McMullan welcomes protections for rural libraries
Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has welcomed protections for libraries in rural areas.
The East Antrim MLA said;
"Libraries play a vital role in the life of rural areas and provide essential services for local communities.
"Given the reductions to the DCAL budget as a result of the British government cuts to the block grant, there had been some concerns about library opening hours.
"Thankfully those concerns have now been addressed and I welcome the commitment from the library boards that no library will see its opening hours drop below 18 hours.
"I particularly welcome the fact that libraries in rural areas will see little or no reduction in their opening hours.
"There will also be no reduction to the mobile library service which provides a real lifeline to people in rural communities.
"I would like to commend the minister and her department for their work to protect libraries in rural areas.
"I will continue to work with the minister, her department and local councils to ensure our rural libraries are well resourced and provide a first-class service to local people."
