Sinn Féin Council support for release of water protesters - Cllr. Mícheál Mac Donncha
Speaking in advance of Dublin City Council's monthly meeting this evening, Sinn Féin Cllr. Mícheál Mac Donncha said the party will be supporting a motion calling for the release of those jailed for water charges protests.
Cllr. Mac Donncha said:
"Water protesters remain behind bars while the two government parties, Fine Gael and Labour, attempt to demonise the campaign against the unjust double taxation of water charges. The fact that over 7,000 people turned up at two days notice to protest at the jailing of the water protesters shows both that the jailings are seen as wrong and that the campaign against the charges is very far from over.
Seldom has any government made such a monumental mess of any issue and treated the people who elected them with such contempt. Sinn Féin will support tonight's motion calling for the release of the imprisoned protesters and we are also urging a massive turnout for the National Right to Water Demonstration in Dublin on 21 March."
