Civic reception for Phil Hogan is "a slap in the face" for ordinary families dealing with his disastrous legacy - Kathleen Funchion
Sinn Féin’s candidate for the Carlow Kilkenny by election Cllr Kathleen Funchion has described a civic reception to be held in honour of former Minister Phil Hogan as “a slap in the face for the ordinary people of the constituency”.
The reception is to be held by Kilkenny County Council on Friday morning to mark Mr Hogan’s appointment as EU Commissioner for Agriculture.
Cllr Funchion said;
“I think it is outrageous to hold a civic reception for a politician who has done so much damage to communities throughout this state. It is ill-judged and it is a waste of money.
“Phil Hogan is the man who brought us the unjust and poverty fostering water charges. He is responsible for the regressive household service charge and the tax on the family home.
“He has been the poster-boy for the decimation of local democracy and the centralisation of power following the implementation of the misleadingly entitled ‘putting people first’ initiative.
“When the going got tough and the backlash intensified, he high-tailed it off to a cushy, highly-paid job with the EU Commission.
“I honestly think that this civic reception is a slap in the face for ordinary families that are now dealing with his disastrous legacy.
“I will not be attending nor will my Sinn Féin colleagues on Kilkenny County Council.
“We will be travelling to the Sinn Féin Ard Fheis in Derry where our party will continue to highlight the progressive alternatives to the failed policies endorsed and actioned by the former Minister.
“The people of this constituency are well shot of Phil Hogan. They deserve better representation and a better, people-centred form of politics
“They deserve a far better future than the present day reality delivered to them by Phil Hogan and his colleagues in government.
“Electing another Fine Gael TD for this community would just bring about more broken promises.”
