Extortionate roaming charges must be abolished in 2015 – Martina Anderson MEP

Speaking today from Strasbourg, Sinn Féin MEP for the six counties, Martina Anderson has reiterated her call that the European Commission should abandon plans to extend  the time frame in which mobile phone operators have to abolish roaming charges.

Recently the Council made proposals to delay ending roaming charges within 3 years-and to allow for only 5 MB of roaming without charges, which is in contrast to the European Parliament's position, adopted within the last year, in strong support of an end to roaming charges within the EU by the end of 2015

Martina said –

“How much longer will the European Parliament stand accused of tolerating or ignoring economic injustice?”

“This Parliament voted in favour of mobile phone providers abolishing roaming charges by the end of this year. “

“That democratic decision has been ignored by the Council’s proposal to delay the abolition 3 years.”

“Council Ministers and their Parties are heavily influenced by or associated with Oligarchs, Elites and Global Corporations -  by big fat business wanting to continue to make big fat profits.”

“The Councils proposal is disgraceful as it will subject consumers along the border corridor of Ireland to ongoing extortionate roaming charges.“
