Liadh Ní Riada MEP raises investment, enterprise and transport with Cork Chamber delegation in Brussels
Sinn Féin MEP for Ireland’s South constituency welcomed representatives of Cork Chamber of Commerce to Brussels today where they had a number of meetings with politicians and policy makers.
Speaking following a roundtable discussion with the delegation Ní Riada said:
“I was glad to meet with the Cork business delegation today and engage in discussions on investment, enterprise supports and employment.
“I discussed my role as rapporteur for the Budget Committee on Juncker’s much-touted investment plan or EFSI. I spoke of my concern about it, and warned delegates to keep a close eye on the plan as it will have a direct impact on SMEs.
“The EFSI as it stands is a re-working of the EU budget, with funds being taken from existing funds such as the Horizon 2020 for research and development. My concern is that vital funds will be siphoned into banks and lending institutions rather than being invested in support for SMEs and the creation of secure and good quality jobs for workers.
“We also discussed transport, especially the strategic importance of Cork Airport to the city and county’s economic development. Cork Airport is a gateway to our region and the Government’s national aviation policy needs to reflect and recognise this. Increase connectivity by air, sea, road and rail are key to Cork’s future.
“Entrepreneurs need to be supported, and access to finance for start-ups and those growing their businesses is paramount. I will continue to liaise with Cork Chamber is securing access to European supports for enterprise, especially in terms of encouraging entrepreneurship amongst young people.”
