Housing crisis being ignored- Cllr Sarah Holland

20 April, 2015 - by Sarah Holland

Sinn Féin Cllr Sarah Holland has today condemned Government inaction on the housing crisis.

Cllr Holland said:

“New cases are coming to me week by week.  What we are seeing is an increase in private landlords selling their properties and evicting tenants, cashing in on the rising Dublin house prices.

“The fact is that tenants have little or no protection from the whims of a private landlord.  The Government is blithely ignoring this, perhaps because they have so many landlords in its ranks.

“Families are being tossed into the street and the Central Placements Service is running out of hotel beds for them.

“Landlords who accept rent allowance are as rare as hens teeth, and South Dublin County Council simply have no homes for people.

“The building projects are to be welcomed, but are a drop in the ocean compared to what is needed.

Minister Alan Kelly’s response has been watery at best and relies too heavily on the private landlords, who quite frankly will always suit themselves.

“Landlords are not providing a public service and should not be relied upon as such – we need the Government to man up and accept responsibility on this.”
