McMullan welcomes extension of animal welfare consultation
Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has welcomed moves from Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill to strengthen animal welfare legislation following concerns over puppy farming.
Mr McMullan said;
"I welcome the fact that Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill, working with Justice Minister David Ford, has extended the closing date for responses to the public consultation of the implementation of the Animal Welfare Act.
"This is important given the recent revelations about dog breeding and puppy farming, which have highlighted the shocking and appalling conditions on some puppy farms.
"The extension of this deadline will allow the public, who are greatly concerned about animal welfare, a further opportunity to have their say on this important legislation.
"This is another indication of Minister O'Neill's commitment to improving animal welfare standards.
"The consultation will now remain open until May 21 and I encourage as many people as possible to take part and make their views known."
