‘No’ campaign deliberately mislead on marriage equality implications – Mary Lou McDonald TD
Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald has criticised the dishonesty of no campaigners in their attempts to convince voters that adoption, surrogacy and the rights of children will be affected if the marriage equality referendum is passed.
Speaking today Deputy McDonald said;
“It is disingenuous and most unfair that issues of great sensitivity such as adoption and surrogacy, are being taken on by the ‘no’ side to support their argument against marriage equality. It is a red herring. This referendum has nothing to do with surrogacy or adoption. These are complex issues that are dealt with in legislation and form no part of this referendum.
“The Children and Family Relationships Bill published two months ago has dealt with matters relating to same and opposite sex couples and adoption. Issues surrounding surrogacy will be addressed later this year with the publishing of a bill under the Department of Health.
“Those on the ‘no’ side talk about every issue under the sun except the actual proposition – to allow gay couples the right to marry. Gay people deserve to have their love respected, honoured and recognised in the same manner as straight people, and to have this love protected by the Constitution. It is that simple.
“I am urging people to look to consider the issue for what it is. This is about a commitment between two people - giving those in same and opposite sex unions the same status. It is about equality and above all, it is about love. Next Friday, I will be voting YES.
