O’Reilly cautiously welcomes Fingal County Council Landlord Involvement Scheme

26 May, 2015

Louise O’Reilly, Sinn Féin general election candidate for Dublin Fingal, gave a cautious welcome to the new scheme announced today by Fingal County Council to attract landlords to lease or rent their properties to local authorities who in turn will provide homes on a fixed termed basis to families.

Ms O’ Reilly said:

"On a daily basis the Sinn Féin team in Fingal encounter the problems of families currently residing in hotels, B&BS and hostels from Fingal and surrounding areas due to the lack of social housing.

“This scheme should be not be seen as the solution to this ever increasing problem.

“We in Sinn Féin have consistently called on the Government to invest in social housing as a priority, and this is why I cautiously welcome this measure.’

“This scheme is fixed for a period of time ranging up to 20 years, but it only provides a sticking plaster to the serious problem that is homelessness.

“Sinn Féin’s Housing policy has the building of communities at the heart of its proposals, the real need for long term investment projects of house building in conjunction with school building is what is required.

“This scheme’s main objective is the reduction of the housing list on a temporary basis, community cohesiveness is not served in the long term in this scheme.’

Ms O Reilly concluded:

“The Government’s Spatial Strategy for the following 15-20 years includes Fingal as one of its growth areas, with this in mind, it is essential that we address the homelessness situation in the County in permanent fashion as opposed to kicking the proverbial can down the road.”
