Bessborough revelations continue to appal – McLellan
Cork TD and Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Children’s Affairs Sandra McLellan has spoken out about an internal HSE report that highlighted concerns that death records were falsified in the Bessborough Mother and Baby Home so that children could be adopted, saying that the callous attitude of those behind Bessborough scandal continues to appal.
Deputy McLellan said:
“The reports today of an internal investigation by the HSE in 2012 are simply staggering. These were places that fostered a culture of cruelty towards those in their care. Death records were falsified so that children could be turned into little more than product for an extensive adoption market. Women were given the most basic care and provision, being treated like criminals.”
“To treat those who were so unfortunate as to find themselves in these homes as little more than commodities is as cold and callous an attitude as you will find. Human trafficking is one of the greatest problems facing modern society, but cases like these remind us that it is not only a modern problem. While this report may be damning, it must also force us to shine a greater light onto the egregious harm and suffering inflicted on those in the Mother and Baby homes of Ireland. It took two years for an inquiry to be established after the HSE report was finished. This is not something we can ignore any longer. It is time to face up to this enormous shame on Irish society.”
