International business interests cannot overrule democracy - Anderson

9 June, 2015 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said international business interests cannot be allowed to overrule democratic institutions.

Speaking ahead of a vote in the European Parliament tomorrow on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), Ms Anderson said;

"The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is one of the largest pieces of legislation to come through the European Parliament and its implications could be very far-reaching.

"It would allow allow major US companies and their subsidiaries to ride roughshod over democratically elected institutions.

"It would give them the power to sue the governments of EU member states for legislating in ways which would impact on their profits through the Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) mechanism.

"This has major implications, not least for for anti-smoking legislation introduced across Europe to improve health outcomes.

"Sinn Féin has repeatedly made our opposition to the ISDS clear, as have the vast majority of people who took part in the largest ever online consultation held by the European Commission, with 97 per cent rejecting it.

"This proposed legislation has sparked considerable anger across Europe and there will be a protest outside the European Parliament tomorrow. I and my Sinn Féin colleagues will be taking part to show our opposition to this legislation."
