Fianna Fáil claims on Sinn Féin Ardmhéara 'laughable'- Cllr. Mac Donncha

29 June, 2015 - by Mícheál Mac Donncha

The claim by a Fianna Fáil Councillor that Sinn Féin is trying to 'hijack' the 1916 Centenary by electing the party's first Ardmhéara of the City this evening has been described as 'laughable' by Sinn Féin Councillor Mícheál Mac Donncha, deputy leader of the party on Dublin

City Council. Cllr. Mac Donncha said:

"This is a last ditch effort by Cllr. Jim O'Callaghan of Fianna Fáil to grab a headline on the day of the mayoral election. He is putting his name forward solely on the basis that he accuses Sinn Féin of wanting to hijack the Centenary of the 1916 Rising.

"Cllr. O'Callaghan's intervention is laughable. All parties on the Council, including Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, had the opportunity to hold the position of Ardmhéara during the Council's term if they had accepted the rotation of the post as proposed by Sinn Féin, the largest political party on the Council.

They refused to do so. In other Councils around the country Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have monopolised mayoral posts, excluding other parties and independents.

That is the only 'hijacking' that is going on.

"Cllr. O'Callaghan totally misrepresents Sinn Féin's position in the negotiations that followed the local elections in May 2014. Our priority was and remains the rights and needs of the citizens of Dublin, especially addressing the escalating housing crisis. We will continue to do all we can within the restricted powers of the Council to limit the effects of the austerity regime imposed on the people by Fianna Fáil and their Fine Gael colleagues.

"Cllr. O'Callaghan's Fianna Fáil party previously chose to ignore or play down the 1916 Rising when it suited them politically to do so. And they can't get away from the fact that in their years in Government they played gombeen politics and created widespread inequality, totally contradicting the equality ethos of the 1916 Proclamation.

"Sinn Féin will be proposing Cllr. Críona Ní Dhálaigh for Ardmhéara this evening. If elected she will play her part fully in fittingly honouring the men and women of 1916 and in implementing the Proclamation."
