Tory claims on child poverty ring hollow – Fearon
Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon has said British government pledges to end child poverty ring hollow as a result of its austerity policies.
Ms Fearon, the Sinn Féin spokesperson on children and young people, said;
"Claims by David Cameron and his Tory colleagues about making child poverty disappear are pure hypocrisy.
"In 2007 David Cameron claimed his party would make child poverty history but those claims ring hollow.
"We are now seeing just how twisted his words were as he seeks to abolish the Child Poverty Act with its commitment to eradicating child poverty by 2020.
"In David Cameron's perfect view of the world, poverty is about lifestyle choices, not lack of money caused by the austerity policies of his government.
"The reality is the majority of children experiencing poverty live in households where at least one parent is in employment.
"There is no doubt those most directly affected by poverty will see through the weasel words of this cabinet of millionaires."
