Alan Farrell TD tax talk nonsensical- Louise O’Reilly

10 July, 2015

Sinn Féin General election candidate for Dublin Fingal Louise O’Reilly has described an attack on his party’s economic policy by Fine Gael TD Alan Farrell as nonsensical.

Speaking today she said;

“Unlike this Fine Gael/Labour Government, Sinn Féin’s tax proposals are progressive and fair.

"Our proposals look to those who can afford to pay a little more to do so and, most importantly, they protect those who cannot not afford to pay.

“But let’s take a look at Fine Gael, what has Fine Gael cost you? A plethora of extra taxes.

“Water Charges, Family Home Tax, DIRT increase, excise duty, pension levy, maternity benefit is now taxed, cuts to single parent tax credits, extra VAT on almost everything you buy, etc.

“When you are a member of a government party that has introduced and increased taxes like no other government it would be wiser to keep the head down on the issue rather than seek a debate with a political opponent.  Unfortunately for him, Alan Farrell has no such cop-on.

“His party has introduced regressive budget after regressive budget which independent bodies such as the ESRI has said targeted at lower and middle income earners.

“Today there is 318 people on trollies in our hospitals, 104,000 families in mortgage arrears, 300,000 being ripped off on their Standard Variable Rate mortgages while the government does nothing.

“Deputy Farrell and his Fine Gael Party are happy to stand over pay increases for politicians and pension increases for former ministers while taking money out of the pockets of single parents.

“Ordinary working families need a break and we will deliver a fair recovery by scrapping water charges and the family home tax.”
