Ruane to address Belfast Pride 'March to Equality' event.
Sinn Féin MLA Caitríona Ruane will today take part in ‘The march to equality’ discussion as part of the Belfast Pride week.
Ms. Ruane said,
“As always it is a pleasure to be asked to contribute to the Belfast Pride week and I look forward to a great event charting Sinn Féin’s history of campaigning for equal rights for the LGB&T community.
“The event will take place in McHugh’s Bar, Custom House Square at 5pm today and I will be joined by two long-time campaigners for equality in Daisy Mules from Derry and Joe Lynch from Dublin.
“The positive referendum vote in the South of Ireland enabling marriage equality for the LGB&T community was a historic moment in bringing equality to this part of the island of Ireland.
“However members of the LGB&T community living in the North still are denied that and many more rights as well.
“We will be reflecting on the various campaigns that have brought us to this position and discussing ways forward in how to end the ban on marriage equality and the donation of blood by gay men, as well as ways of combatting homophobia.
“I would encourage people to come along, support the event and engage in what will be a lively discussion.” ENDS/CRÍOCH
