Support for dairy farmers at Belfast protest
Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan said the dairy farmer’s protest at the EU offices in Belfast was the latest round in calling for the European invention price for milk to be raised in order to stabilise the global dairy market which would in-turn ensure that farmers receive a fair return for their produce.
Mr McMullan said,
“I went today to show my support for the dairy farmers in their fight to get a fair and equitable price for their produce.
“I was pleased to see so many young farmers turn up today to fight for their industry and that they were confident that with a change of circumstance the future could be much better.
“The farmers handed in a letter of concern to Collette Fitzgerald head of the EU Commission office n Belfast
“All farmers, particularly our dairy farmers are under extreme pressure at present and many are facing financial ruin unless we get an a better intervention price from Europe.
“Sinn Féin and the Minister Michelle O’Neill has stood by the dairy farmers from the beginning of this crisis and will continue to stand with them until they get a price for their produce that will allow their farms to be financially viable again.
“Farmers will be avidly awaiting the outcome of the special EU Agricultural meeting which is taking place in Brussels next week which Minister O'Neill will be attending to represent the views of the local industry.”
