Irish Water reneging on commitments made with councils- Cllr Shane O’Brien

5 October, 2015 - by Shane O'Brien

Sinn Féin Cllr Shane O’Brien has accused Irish Water of reneging on commitments made with local councils.

Cllr O’Brien said:

“Irish Water is strangling Local Authorities from carrying out their basic responsibilities by reneging on its agreement to allow councils to hire staff to replace those that have retired or have left the civil service”

“Under the current SLA (service level agreement) which was agreed between all local authorities and Irish Water, the much maligned utility company committed to an agreed headcount. Currently there are around 100 posts below the agreed staffing levels.”

“Unions representing water services staff throughout the state have attempted to have these issues addressed.

“However despite several meetings this year both through the Irish Water Consultative Group and directly with Irish Water no resolution has been reached.”

He concluded:

“Throughout the past year it has become evident that the provision of water services has been both underfunded and under resourced to carry out such an essential service.

“Decades of bad governance and short termism politics have allowed this to become the norm. However Irish Water is not addressing these underlying issues, in fact it is exacerbating the problem.”
