Supply Chain Forum can maximise potential of Agri-food industry

7 October, 2015 - by Oliver McMullan

Sinn Féin Agricultural spokesperson Oliver McMullan has welcomed the first meeting of the Supply Chain Forum designed to maximise the potential of the Agri Food industry by ensuring fair trading conditions between farmers, producers and retailers.

 Mr McMullan said,

“The agri-food industry is the biggest industry in the North in Ireland and has massive potential to create economic growth over the years ahead if managed right.

“One of the biggest challenges that the industry faces is getting farmers a fair price for their produce while allowing producers and retailers to also make a profit.

“The Supply Chain Forum is an initiative introduced by the DARD Minister Michelle O’Neill through the Agri-food Strategy Board that will allow significant challenges that the industry face to be resolved by bringing all the partners together.

“It is crucial that all parts of the supply chain from the farm to the shelf are economically viable as is seen with the crisis within the dairy sector so bringing them all together will allow for a better understanding of the problems facing each industry.

“This first event will take place at CAFRE’s Loughry campus on Wednesday, 14th October 2015 and I am confident that this forum will help address many of the issues all parties within the agri food sector face.”
