Government must support Irish language broadcasting - Ó Clochartaigh
Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has called on the government to provide additional support to TG4 and to lobby the British government on Irish language programming:
Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:
“Media is a powerful force that can shape how people think about issues.
“In Ireland, there have been many attempts by individuals to gain control of a large portion of the media. As a result, we need greater oversight of the handling of media mergers by government.
“It is essential that Ireland has a diverse media that can accommodate broad political and civil debate and the free exchange of ideas.
“A free and open media requires the Irish language, gender representation and ethnic and religious minorities should be allowed adequate space in the media market.
“The promotion of the Irish language in broadcasting is essential to the language a whole.
“TG4, broadcasting under the slogan of ‘Súil Eile’, another perspective, have done sterling work, not just in promoting the Irish language, but also in offering an alternative narrative.
“As the one hundredth anniversary of the 1916 Rising approaches, TG4 have produced some excellent programmes on the subject, and with sufficient funding is capable of producing many more.
“TG4 is highly respected and the government should be willing to offer its support.
“We also need pressure on the British government to ensure the permanency of the Irish Language Broadcast Fund and the ongoing production of Irish language programming from the six counties”.
