Iarnród Éireann should honour commitments on workers productivity – Ellis

19 October, 2015 - by Dessie Ellis TD

Sinn Féin Transport Spokesperson Dessie Ellis TD has called on Iarnród Éireann to reconvene discussions with the National Bus and Rail Union in advance of industrial action. He said that the company should honour its agreements to recognise past productivity of drivers under a previous Labour Relations agreement in order to avert disruption by justified strike action.

Deputy Ellis said:

“Iarnród Éireann committed to recognising the past productivity of drivers in a previous Labour Relations agreement with the NBRU in September 2014. It is very important that a company of Iarnród Éireann’s standing maintains its image as a good employer and part of that image is tied to the fair and honest treatment of workers with which it has reached an agreement.

“Iarnród Éireann workers have worked hard over the last number of years to maintain the service in the face of austerity and economic depression. Their efforts should be recognised and rewarded accordingly.

“The depth of the feeling of dissatisfaction with the situation is clear when you consider that 95% of NBRU members voted in favour of industrial action if the issue was not resolved. Despite a number of meetings recently, Iarnród Éireann has not made sufficient efforts to satisfy their workers that the previous agreement has not been breached.

“In the interests of the company, the workers, and our public transport network, I call on the management to reconvene discussion with a view to resolving the concerns of workers and averting strike action through agreement.”
