Yet another delay in Setanta case as Motor Insurance Bureau Ireland appeals High Court decision – Doherty

20 October, 2015 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has said yet another delay in the Setanta Insurance saga seems inevitable. Correspondence received by the Oireachtas Finance Committee shows that a decision to appeal the High Court ruling by the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIBI) means another delay is likely for the customers of the liquidated company.

Deputy Doherty said:

“I am extremely frustrated that yet another delay now seems inevitable. The award of a stay on the judgment means another wait for the customers of Setanta. This issue has rumbled on far too long already and a swift resolution is now required.

“This latest delay is the latest in a long series following on from legal advice given to the Ministers for Finance and the Minister for Transport which said that the Insurance Compensation Fund and not the MIBI was liable.

“Then the High Court ruled that the MIBI was indeed liable. This was a welcome decision for claimants but now the Finance Committee has been told that an appeal to this ruling will take place. In the meantime people who are awaiting claims at Setanta are asked to wait once more.”
