Impact of BREXIT on Ireland too important to ignore – Liadh Ní Riada MEP

20 November, 2015 - by Liadh Ní Riada MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada warned about complacency on the subject of a potential British withdrawal from the EU and stated that such a move would have major consequences for Ireland.

The Ireland South MEP was speaking to European Studies and Business students at Cork College of Commerce this morning.

Ní Riada said:

“The potential of BREXIT is something that could have major negative impacts on Ireland and it is important that Irish concerns are heard and considered during the debate.

“Sinn Féin believes that Europe needs serious and radical democratic reform. We believe in strengthening the accountability and transparency of the European institutions. We are not in favour of a withdrawal from the European Union and completely oppose BREXIT.

“The potential of a British withdrawal from the EU raises serious concerns around agriculture and jobs, infrastructure, energy, cross border trade and travel, human rights and the Peace Process.

“We in Sinn Féin will continue to ensure that the Irish dimension is raised during the BREXIT debate. The British Government has ignored it, so it is vital that effects on Ireland are highlighted and considered.”
