New TASC report highlights widening chasm between rich and poor- Lynn Boylan MEP
Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has commented on the latest TASC report, “The Distribution of Wealth in Ireland,” calling the results “shocking” but hardly surprising given the level of cuts endured by ordinary families under the current government.
The Dublin MEP and author of an EU report on gender and poverty said:
“This report is full of quite frankly appalling information, and demonstrates how Ireland is more than the European average in terms of the highly concentrated nature of wealth.
“In this country, according to the report, 72.7% of net wealth is held by 20% of households, compared to the Euro area average of 67.6%.
“What alarmed me the most was that the report illustrated that single parent households, the majority of which are headed up by women, have the least wealth in the country.
“It is arguable that these figures will only get worse once the full impact of the draconian cuts to lone parent allowances implemented by the Tánaiste Joan Burton this summer are felt.
“There is an easy way to ensure equality in government policy and that is to equality proof the budget, something Sinn Féin has long called for.”
