QUB should divest from fossil fuel companies - Hazzard
Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard has called on Queens University Belfast (QUB) to divest from fossil fuel companies.
Speaking in support of the student occupation of the QUB administration block Mr Hazzard stated:
"Queen’s currently invest £5.5m into fossil fuel companies despite having an ethical investment policy.
"In a week in which every country on the planet have agreed in Paris to a reduction in fossil fuels it is imperative QUB also make a statement on its plans for fossil fuel divestment.
"Over the last year the university has refused to engaged constructively with the campaign despite the submission to them of a 47-page academic report outlining the case for fossil fuel divestment.
"This campaign has been given a decisive mandate from staff and students as well as support from trade unions, charities, NGOs, community groups and political parties across the spectrum.
"The university should review their investment policy immediately and become more ethical in its investments which 83% of students and staff voted for.
"The university needs to act responsibly in regards to this protest and allow access to food and other necessities to the protesters. I believe this protest can be resolved with a declaration of intent on behalf of the university.
"Sinn Féin will continue to support the staff and students in holding the university in regards to its ethical policy through the use of peaceful protest.”
