Moore St should not be another Nama mistake – McLellan
Speaking today on the occupation of the units in Moore Street, Sinn Féin TD and Heritage Spokesperson Sandra McLellan commended the protesters for their commitment and solidarity in what is an issue of significant historical and national importance.
The Cork East deputy said:
“We have asked questions of the Minister for quite some time now but have consistently been stonewalled and told the matter was one for DCC. Moore Street and the surrounding areas are of significant historical and national importance and we feel the area, and the restoration of the area to form a historical quarter, is a proposal which should be seriously considered due to the potential economic and social benefits.
“We shall continue to voice our concerns and discontent on this issue with both the Government and Hammerson who are now the owners of the Nama portfolio which was held in the area. It's fantastic to see the people on the ground having organised this occupation as well as the many other groups who have been working on this.
“They have our continued support and I would like to commend them for their efforts. We shall persevere with this issue and fight until the government decide to listen to the will and wants of the people, which is what they were elected to do. The mobilisation of the people brought on the rebellion of 1916. Wouldn't it be fitting if the same were to happen this year to retain such an important historical site?”
