Alarm at Low level of Dog Fouling Fines in Dublin City in 2015 –Councillor Denise Mitchell

21 January, 2016 - by Denise Mitchell TD

General election candidate for Dublin Bay North, Dublin City Councillor Denise Mitchell has said she is alarmed at the level of fines issued for Dog fouling in 2015.

Speaking from Donnycarney today she said,

“Dog fouling is a huge issue in my area of Dublin Bay North  whether it’s on footpaths, parks or beaches.

For Dublin City Council’s litter prevention department to tell me that not one fine was issued in 2015 in my area is a shock and a clear indication that the Bylaws are not being implemented.

In fact outside Dublin South Central where a pilot scheme was operating, there were no fines issued anywhere else in Dublin last year.

Of the 26 fines issued in 2015 all were issued in Dublin South Central and are a result of a pilot scheme to tackle dog fouling in that area.

While these levels are still too low, it is a marked improvement on 2014 where only two fines were issued across Dublin.

Dublin City Council needs to roll this pilot scheme into all areas of Dublin City.

Dog fouling might seem like a small issue to some people but it is certainly an issue that is coming up on doors with me.

No one wants to see their local streets or beaches covered in Dog foul and I would urge the council to tackle this problem immediately
