O’Brien criticises Fine Gael plans to saddle students with more debt
Speaking today Sinn Fein Education Spokesperson Deputy Jonathan O’Brien criticised Fine Gael’s plans to introduce a loan scheme for students saying that it would push even more students from low income backgrounds out of education.
The Cork North Central TD said;
“Fine Gael have been floating the idea of student loans for quite a while and these ill-thought out suggestions would merely have the effect of saddling students with more debt.
“This isn’t about how to get more low income and poor or minority students into third level education. It is about how they can get out of funding third level education.
“Any introduction of a loan system like this will simply eradicate the grant system by stealth, which is what Fine Gael ultimately want.
“We are steadfastly opposed to this type of proposal.”
