Sinn Féin to table amendments to ban zero hour contracts - Flanagan
Sinn Féin MLA Phil Flanagan has said Sinn Féin will put forward amendments to the Employment Bill which ban the use of zero hour contracts.
Mr Flanagan said;
"Zero hour contracts have a deeply negative impact on workers’ rights, protections and employment practices. They are bad for the 28,000 workers who have them, bad for their families and bad for society.
"They also disproportionately affect women and unskilled workers, negatively impacting on individual human dignity and self-esteem.
"During a recent public consultation, the DEL Minister Stephen Farry acknowledged the negative impact of zero hour contracts for workers, yet his proposals to address this issue were totally inadequate. Sinn Féin believes that zero hour contracts need to be banned".
"The passage of the Employment Bill is an opportunity to address this abuse of workers’ rights and Sinn Féin have tabled amendments, which would prohibit the use of zero hour contracts. Inaction on this issue would be a massive missed opportunity.”
