Ó Muilleoir welcomes university accommodation announcement.
South Belfast MLA, Máirtín Ó Muilleoir, has welcomed today’s announcement by Queen’s University that it has signed an agreement with developers McAleer and Rushe to develop 1,200 student accommodation places in Belfast city centre.
Speaking this morning, the Sinn Féin MLA stated:
"I welcome this announcement from Queen’s University.
“In 2010 Sinn Féin in South Belfast published a number of proposals for the regeneration of the Holyland and University areas.
“One of those proposals called on the universities to provide increased student accommodation, which would help alleviate some of the social problems facing the the area.
“I am pleased that Queen’s has risen to this challenge.
“Last week in the Assembly chamber I raised with the Minister for Social Development the potential for returning parts of the Holyland area back into use for families on the social housing waiting list.
“I believe this would help redress the social imbalance caused by much of the housing stock in the area being turned into HMOs to meet the needs of students. This saw many long-term residents leave the area.
“Now with the Queen’s announcement and the potential for further purpose-built student accommodation in the city, I believe there is a real opportunity to address this issue for the long term."
