January homelessness figures 'beyond shocking' - Cllr Chris Andrews

22 February, 2016 - by Chris Andrews

Sinn Féin general election candidate for the Dublin Bay South constituency Cllr. Chris Andrews, who is a team leader with the Inner City Helping Homeless group, has described the latest homelessness figures released by Focus Ireland as 'beyond shocking'.

Cllr. Andrews said:

"The latest homelessness figures released by Focus Ireland, which show an almost threefold increase compared to figures for January of last year, are just beyond shocking and the latest indication that Minister Alan Kelly's claims to be tackling the homelessness crisis are nothing more than worthless bluster.

"His Fine Gael coalition partners promise to 'keep to recovery going' is an absolute and utter insult to the 1,570 children who will sleep in emergency accommodation tonight and the 134 families made homeless in January alone.

“Whilst the Government parties seem to be oblivious to the housing and homelessness crises, Sinn Féin will not stand back and allow citizens to continue living on our streets, in homeless shelters and in emergency accommodation.

"We are commited to delivering €5 billion in capital spending on housing over the next five years to ensure the delivery of 36,500 new social and affordable homes."
