Kearney welcomes new routes for Belfast International Airport
Sinn Féin National Chairperson Declan Kearney has said the announcement of seven new routes for Belfast International Airport is a boost to the local economy and tourism industry.
The Sinn Féin candidate for South Antrim in the forthcoming Assembly Election said today:
“The announcement of seven new routes for Belfast International Airport by Ryanair, including several major European cities, is a boost to the connectivity and economic performance of the North of Ireland.
“Certainly in the short term this investment will create more employment opportunities for the airport's wider hinterland. In the longer term it will enhance tourism and business potential for the local market.
"This is a huge boost to optimising the airport's role in the regional economy and as a major asset to our local transport and economic infrastructure.
“I believe that while this a good news story, still more can be done to continue attracting a greater number of airlines to the airport.
“A greater strategic focus is required on integrating other public transport systems, road and rail links with the airport to assist in promoting further investment in it, and as a way to improving overall access.
“The reopening of the Knockmore line should be brought directly back into play as a key part of such a planning process.”
