Local consultation needed for second Dublin runway – Louise O'Reilly TD
Sinn Féin TD for Fingal Louise O'Reilly has said that a wide and intensive consultation is needed with between the Dublin Airport Authority and local communities to ensure any second runway in the capital will not effect the quality of life of residents in and around the flight path. She made her comments following an announcement today by DAA that they will be proceeding with a second runway for the capital's airport.
Deputy O'Reilly continued;
"Planning permission for this was granted with strict criteria to restrict the use at night time and it has to be borne in mind that this permission was granted almost 10 years ago - the surrounding area has changed considerably in the intervening time and residents need to be consulted.
"Over the course of the election campaign I met with many people who had grave concerns for the effect a new runway or further development of Dublin Airport would have on their quality of life. They did not feel that their opinion had be sufficiently sought at that time and I do not believe at present enough has been done by DAA to hear these concerns or to allay these fears.
"We also need to make sure that an expansion of capacity can be matched by complimentary transport services to and from the airport. Traffic congestion is an increasingly serious problem around the airport and successive cuts to public transport companies like Dublin Bus have not helped. Any second runway development must be done in conjunction with improvements to the airports transport links."
